Ancestral work based on Queen Maeve’s Cairn at Knocknarea, in the land of my own heritage, Ireland.
Trimmings from our handmade ceramic endeavors which tend to get piled up into little “cairns” around my workbench while sculpting.
I decided to expand on these small formulaic expressions, and to create a body of work which uses this idea, and this very clay to produce at-human scale objects/sculptures.
We wait until we have about 100 lbs of recycled clay, and then re-wedge by hand, extrude and use all of the dynamism, specific body shape and movements to throw extrusions violently against a collapsible mold. Closing a circle on waste, ushering in a sensitivity to my own body genetics and form, and really like the Cairns of Ireland - just really nice piles of material.
